Description
Hong-Kai Wang will talk about her recent projects Hazzeh, Borom and fuengu respectively produced in Jordan & Palestine; Jeju Island, South Korea; and Alishan, Taiwan. These projects move along the fault lines, follow the trajectory of winds and seek the sounds of mountains, while attempting to navigate the entanglements between radical moments and lands, trauma, truth, violence, belonging as well as the possibility of (ir)reconcilability. There is a question at stake: how do distance and difference connect radically? In considering this inquiry, Wang invites the audience to ask and think together: is it possible to ground our body and ears across different times and places? Between the knowable and unknowable, the listenable and unlistenable, under which sonic geographies, epistemological systems, sensate structures, and ideologies are we conditioned to listen? Who is singing? Who listening? And, who is being listened to?
Bio
Born in Huwei, Taiwan, Hong-Kai Wang’s research-based practice is informed by the unceasing tension between languages, ideologies, identities and knowledge regimes, confronting the politics of knowledges and radical moments lost at the intersection of lived experience, power, and “listening.” Through experimenting on modes of sonic sociality, her multidisciplinary work seeks to conceive of other time-spaces that critically interweave the production of desire, histories of labor, economies of co-habitation, and formations of knowledge.
Wang has presented her practice internationally at Arts Maebashi, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (radio), Artspeak, Asia Art Biennial 2019, Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama 2019, Sculpture Center New York, documenta 14, Taipei Biennial 2016, Liquid Architecture, Museum of Modern Art New York among others. She was one of the represented artists at Taiwan Pavilion in the 54th Venice Biennale.
